FOLLOW-UP LETTER TO RUNNERS AND WALKERS

Thank you for supporting Special Olympics Delaware by registering to participate in our 5K Run to the Plunge this past Saturday. Unfortunately, the strong winds and torrential rains forced us to cancel the event. At the time the decision was made the high wind and rain combination created an imminent danger for the volunteers working in our registration tent, runners who were showing up to register, and those who were going to work out in the elements to set-up the course itself. The wind and rain combination along with a forecast for even stronger conditions to continue at race time were the reasons we canceled the event. Your safety and that of our volunteers is the most important factor in determining whether or not an event can be held. Hindsight is 20/20 and we all witnessed clearer skies later in the day; however, we feel confident in our decision given the conditions and projected forecast at the time it was made.

For those of you who were not able to pick up your runner bags, we are mailing your event t-shirts out this week. Please look for them in the mail and wear them in good health.

We are already discussing this year’s issues as we take stock of the situation and plan for next year’s event. Please know our decision to cancel was not made lightly. Next year, we will have a scheduled rain date to help contend with weather issues. The rain date will more than likely be the next day (the day of the Plunge itself) early in the morning. Thank you again for your understanding and we look forward to hosting you and better weather in 2011.

MARIACHI'S WINS CHILI CONTEST

For the second consecutive year, Mariachi's took home the title for "Best Chili" at the 2010 Lewes Polar Bear Plunge Weekend Festival.

EMMERT AUCTION ASSOCIATES COMES THROUGH FOR BEARS

A very special thanks goes out to Emmert Auction Associates for graciously giving up their Sunday reservation at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center to allow the Bears to enjoy the traditional Apres Plunge Party.

The auction, originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, will still be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. So if you are in town, please consider heading down to the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center on Rehoboth Avenue to see a great selection of furniture, artwork, china, books, toys, and a whole lot more.

We thank Emmert Auction Associates for supporting our Bears, and hope our Bears, in turn, will support them.
